DIPLOMATIC GEOGRAPHY — A NEW DISCIPLINE IN POLITICAL GEOGRAPHY
Rubrics: A PRIORI
Abstract and keywords
Abstract (English):
Diplomatic geography is the science of the spatial dimension of diplomatic activity. Like any human activity, diplomatic work has a spatial dimension: sometimes, for example, the location of negotiations is more important than their actual results. The number of foreign missions can indicate the weight of a country in world politics, and the choice of countries and cities to host their embassies (but not only, also consulates, trade and cultural missions, etc.) can reflect the foreign policy priorities of the country. Eric Neumeyer proved the importance of three factors for the placement of embassies: geographical proximity to the analyzed country, the importance of the host country in world politics, and ideological closeness between countries. And the locations of foreign consulates in a country can indicate its internal territorial structure and the foreign policy activity of its regions. The article formulates the subject and directions of diplomatic geography, and also provides primary material for generalizing the diplomatic geography of Russia.
