This article examines the influence of symbolic geopolitical capital on the formation of political identity and public consciousness in modern Russian cities. The main attention is paid to the conflictogenic nature of geopolitical signs, which often become objects of controversy and activism. Potential sources of conflictogenicity are analyzed, including conflicts related to foreign wars, territorial expansions and sovereignty issues. The author explores the changing hierarchy of material geopolitical signs depending on the political context. Special attention is paid to the processes of internationalization and de-internationalization that took place in the toponymy of Saint Petersburg during the 20th century. It also emphasizes the fact that historical names retain latent conflict potential, which can be activated in new political conditions. Despite renaming in the post-Soviet period, many names continue to refer to the imperial past, which affects citizens’ perception of history and geopolitics. In conclusion, the author emphasizes that symbolic signs form "normative” and "normal” geopolitical pictures of the world, which are important for ideological processes and political mobilization in society.
